In 'Bismillah', Layla Önlen opens a box containing one hundred metres of embroidered ribbon. As the ribbon unrolls, she weaves her personal history together with that of other women.

Together with the audience, the story grows through text, movement and sound. An intimate, sensory performance about memory, closeness and carrying a story together.

About the maker

Layla Önlen (1978) is an interdisciplinary theatre maker and performer. She graduated from Toneelacademie Maastricht in 2023 and is currently connected to talent development platform Via Zuid and Platform 0090. In her work, she translates personal history into universal experiences and explores how memory, body and community activate one another. Her fascination with textiles and rituals returns in the red ribbon, a recurring element in her artistic practice.
